The place

A grand old hotel. A whole lot of quilting joy.

From the magnificent historic lobby to the rocking chairs on the sprawling front porch, French Lick Springs Hotel is the sort of place that makes you want to slow down, settle in, and stay awhile. That's exactly the idea.

When you're ready for a break from your machine, there's a full-service spa, an indoor pool, several restaurants, a non-smoking casino, and a free trolley to the breathtaking domed atrium at West Baden Springs Hotel next door.

A little learning, a lot of sewing

One small technique can make everything else work better

Angela and the Quilt Fairies teach a special lesson each day. Maybe it's a more accurate way to piece a block, or a clever shortcut that saves time without sacrificing precision. Attend every lesson or choose the ones that interest you most.

The rest of the time? Sew to your heart's content. Bring that quilt you've been itching to finish. There's no pressure to keep up with anyone else's progress.

Good food, good friends

Nine meals together, and no dishes to wash

Wednesday starts with a welcome reception and dinner. Thursday through Sunday, breakfast is waiting for you. Lunch Thursday through Saturday, afternoon snack breaks, and a farewell dinner Saturday night.

Thursday and Friday evenings are yours. Try one of the resort restaurants with new quilting friends, book a spa appointment, or sneak back to the sewing room because those last two rows are calling your name. We all know what that's like.

Angela Huffman, owner of Quilted Joy

Co-host of Fons & Porter's Love of Quilting on PBS

Your host

Come sew with Angela

You may know Angela from PBS, from a visit to Quilted Joy, or from one of her classes. This retreat is a little different. Angela isn't coming to French Lick to teach a class and disappear. She's coming to quilt with you.

Her machine will be set up in the ballroom all week, working on projects right alongside everyone else. Plenty of fabric chatter, plenty of chances to compare techniques, and time to ask the quilting questions you've been saving.

The plan

How the five days unfold

The short version: sew all day, eat well, learn something, laugh a lot.

  1. Wednesday, March 31

    Arrive, settle in, welcome dinner

Check in at the hotel from 4 PM, find your sewing space in the ballroom, meet the Quilt Fairies, and join us for the welcome reception and dinner.

  2. Thursday, April 1

    Sew, learn, explore

Sewing room opens at 7 AM. Breakfast, Angela's lesson, lunch, and an afternoon snack break. Dinner is on your own: resort restaurants, the trolley into town, or the spa.

  3. Friday, April 2

    More sewing, more surprises

Breakfast, a new lesson, lunch, snack break, and a few Quilt Fairy games and prizes along the way. Evening free. Night owls, the room stays open past midnight.

  4. Saturday, April 3

Full day of sewing and the farewell dinner

Breakfast, lesson, lunch, and a full afternoon at your machine. We gather one more time for the farewell dinner Saturday night.

  5. Sunday, April 4

    Breakfast and goodbyes

One last breakfast together before heading home with two new projects, a bag of fabric, and a few new quilting friends.

The full schedule and a packing list are emailed to every registered quilter before the retreat.

Good to know

Retreat questions, answered

The full list of questions lives on the registration page. Here are the ones we hear most.

Registration and payment

Is my hotel room included in the registration fee?

No. Your registration covers the retreat itself: your sewing space, two exclusive project kits, daily lessons with Angela, your swag bag, and the meals listed above. You book and pay for your room separately, directly with French Lick Springs Hotel, at our discounted group rate.

When is payment due?

Your registration is paid in full when you sign up. No deposit and no balance to remember later.

What if I need to cancel?

You get a full refund through January 30, 2027. After that our commitment to the resort is final and we're not able to refund your registration, but we'll gladly transfer your seat to another quilter, and if we fill your spot we'll refund you in full. We recommend travel insurance. Your hotel room is cancelled directly with the resort under their policy.

What if the retreat sells out?

Get on the waitlist. Seats do open up, and waitlist quilters hear first.

Your room and the resort

How do I book my room?

Call the resort at 1-844-241-6361 and give them group code 0327QJR. Tell them you're with the Quilted Joy retreat. Book the same day you register, because our block is limited.

Am I required to stay at the resort?

No, but we highly recommend it. Staying at this historic resort is a big part of the experience, and the mornings when everyone wanders down to breakfast together are some of the best hours of the whole week.

What airport do I fly into?

Louisville (SDF) is closest, about ninety minutes away. Indianapolis (IND) is roughly two hours. There's no shuttle from either airport, so plan on a rental car or a ride with a quilting friend.

Can my husband or a non-quilting friend come along?

They're welcome at the resort and there's plenty for them to enjoy: the golf course, the spa, the casino, and the trolley over to West Baden. Meals and the sewing room are for registered quilters only.

The sewing room

What are the sewing room hours?

The room opens at 7:00 each morning and stays open past midnight for our night owls. Your space is yours for the entire retreat, so leave your project exactly where it is.

Do you rent sewing machines?

Yes. We have a limited number available for $125 for the whole retreat, set up and ready to sew when you arrive. Add one when you register, because they go quickly.

What should I bring?

Your machine, power cord and foot pedal, an extension cord, a clip-on light if you like one, your favorite scissors and small tools, thread, extra needles and bobbins, and something to carry it all in. We'll send a full packing list before the retreat.

I'm not an advanced quilter. Will I be lost?

Not at all. The projects arrive precut and ready to sew, Angela teaches as she goes, and the Quilt Fairies are in the room the whole time. Confident beginners do beautifully at a retreat like this.

Still wondering about something? Call the Quilt Fairies at (502) 718-7148.

Come make some Quilt Fairy memories

Some of the best quilting memories aren't about the quilts. They're about the friends made along the way, the technique that finally clicks, and the laughter when a room full of quilters gets together.
