Your child does not need to own one, and you do not need to buy one to find out whether this is going to stick.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eEveryone Starts With the Introductory Workshop\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore joining a session, every new student takes the Introductory Workshop. It is a single two hour class, and it is required.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe workshop covers sewing machine safety and operation, threading, the common tools and what they are called, cutting and pinning, basic seams, and how to behave around equipment that has a needle moving very fast. Students make a small project and take it home the same day.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt exists so that nobody spends the first two weeks of a six week session learning where the foot pedal is. It also means the first class is a genuine trial: two hours, one project, and a clear answer about whether your child enjoyed it.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat a Session Looks Like\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSessions run six weeks, meeting once a week on Wednesday afternoons, with two time slots so families can work around school pickup.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOver the six weeks students learn machine operation and safety, sewing tools and terminology, measuring and cutting, fabric preparation, seam construction, and how to read and follow a simple pattern. They complete two projects, which is deliberate: one to learn on and one to get right.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo previous experience is needed. Instructors work with each student at their own pace, so a child who has never touched a machine and one who has sewn at home both have somewhere to go.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eWhat This Is Actually Teaching\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSewing is unusual among children's activities in that the feedback is immediate and entirely honest. A seam is straight or it is not. A measurement was right or the piece does not fit.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThat turns out to be the useful part. Students learn to follow a sequence of instructions, to measure carefully because the consequence of not doing so is visible, to fix something that has gone wrong rather than start over, and to finish a thing they can hold. If your child stays with the program and you decide you want one at home, come and talk to us then rather than now, and bring the child, because the machine that suits a ten year old is not always the obvious one.
